While other tools boast speeds between 12,000 and 15,000 rpm, the Porta-Plane's beefy 7 amp motor runs at 22,000 rpm. Porter-Cable combines that power with a spiral-blade cutterhead that shaves the wood rather than chopping at it the way a straight blade does, producing smoother finished edges than those produced by other power planes. This model has a solid and true stainless-steel bed and integral fence, which bevels from 15 to 90 degrees. The price may seem pretty steep compared to other hand planers on the market, but in this instance you definitely get what you pay for.
